But in my opinion, it can feel like there are two on every street corner since the coffee brand has penetrated so many locations like airports, grocery stores, and even department stores like Target. No matter where you live, there’s probably a Starbucks nearby offering a wide range of coffees, teas, pastries, sandwiches, and snacks.

If you’re heading to your local Starbucks, here are the update menu prices for 2023. I even share some unique drink customizations and my favorite ways to save money at Starbucks as a regular customer myself. Let’s do this.

Know Your Drink Customization & Prices: What’s Available?

Starbucks corporate leadership team and investors hope you’ll order drink customizations.In fact, the company reported making an extra $1 billion in sales by upselling different drink modifications like syrups and double shots last year.

In Q4 of 2022, 76% of the sales of cold orders, 60% were customized. Generation Z in particular seems to favor customized drinks. This led to higher profits and encouraged the company to provide more drink upsell options like syrups, milk choices, and more.

Of course not every customization at Starbucks costs you more money. Here’s a break down of free and premium drink add ons that cost a little bit extra.

Espresso Shot:If you want to have stronger “kicks” you can ask the barista for extra shots of espresso to add to your Starbucks drink. The charge for an extra espresso shot is $0.80.

Milk / Creamers: In early 2023, Starbucks stopped charging extrafor non-diary creamer options. The company used to charge $0.70 for things like oat or coconut milk.

You can now order whole, non-fat, or 2% milk. If you’re lactose intolerant, you can have the barista add non-dairy and plant-based alternatives such as oat, coconut, and soy milk. They also offer Starbucks Original Nut Blend at no extra charge.

Syrups:Syrups are used to sweeten your drinks. You can ask the barista for fewer syrup pumps if you want. When you ask for syrup pumps the standard is 3 pumps according to my local barista. This can be flavor overload if you’re ordering a tall coffee. You can also opt for sugar-free syrup, which is available in vanilla or cinnamon dolce. Skinny mocha sauce is also available if you don’t have sweet tooth. All pumps cost an extra $0.50.

Sweeteners:Starbucks also has substitutes for sugar to sweeten your drink, specifically Stevia Blend from Whole Earth or Splenda. There is no additional charge for these sweeteners to be added.

Whipped cream:You can ask for more whipped cream, less whipped cream, or none at all. Extra whipped cream is $0.50.

Skinny:If you’re watching your calories, ask the barista to make your drink “skinny.” The barista will prepare your favorite beverages using nonfat milk, sugar-free syrup, and no whipped cream. The price of a skinny beverage depends on what you order.

What You Can Do To Save Money At Starbucks

According to The New York Times, Starbucks increased its prices in 2022 because of the labor crisis and supply chain issues. This is similar to the decisions made by many fast-food chains and restaurants all over the country.

But, don’t fret. Even though prices have increased the past couple years there are still a lot of ways to save.

If you’re a frequent Starbucks drinker, we highly recommend that you take advantage of a Starbucks rewards card. The card allows you to earn great rewards such as free or discounted drinks, flavor shots, snacks, and other treats.

Go to Starbucks during your birthday.

That’s because you can get a free drink during on your birthday. Just bring an ID to validate your birthday or sign up with the app. It just happened to be my birthday yesterday. The free birthday drink coupon displayed when I opened the Starbucks app.

Go to Starbucks on Thursday.

Most Starbucks outlets offer a Buy 1, Get 1 Free promo on Thursdays. The promo usually runs from 2 to 7 PM. You can get Starbucks Happy Hour coupons through the Starbucks app.

Bring your own mug.

Bringing your own mug takes 10 cents off your order. Starbucks is not strict on mugs, so you can bring your favorite one to your local Starbucks, even if it’s not officially a Starbucks mug.

Bring a friend.

Order the biggest size you can afford, often the Venti. Then split the drink between you and a friend. Just ask for an empty cup, and Starbucks will provide you with one.

Don’t ask for too much ice.

Order a cold drink with only half of—or even less—the normal amount of ice. You’re essentially paying for a smaller-sized drink but enjoying the contents of the next-sized up drink.

Order a “short.”

Starbucks outlets have a “short” order, which is often not presented on the menu. It’s a size below “Tall” and will cost less.

Don’t buy Starbucks bottled water.

Just ask your barista for a water. Starbucks water is filtered and tastes good. You can order a tall, grande, or venti sized water for free with ice or without.

What time does Starbucks open and close?

Starbucks outlets usually open early at 5 a.m. – 6 a.m. on Mondays to Saturdays. They open at 7 AM on Sundays.Closing time is usually between 8 – 10 p.m. from Mondays to Saturdays, and 7 PM on Sundays.

Again, check your local Starbucks for exact hours of operation. Hours willvary depending on the store or the location. For example, if there’s a Starbucks in your local mall, that outlet may follow mall hours. If there’s a Starbucks located in Target store, it will only be open during that Target’s store hours.

How many ounces are in a Starbucks Venti?

There are 24 ounces in a Starbucks Venti for cold drinks. Venti hot drinks are 20 ounces.

Here are the number of ounces for each drink size at Starbucks:

• Short: 8 ounces (not available for all drinks)
• Tall: 12 ounces
• Grande: 16 ounces
• Venti: 20 ounces (hot drinks) or 24 ounces (cold drinks)
• Trenta: 31 ounces (cold drinks only)

Is there a secret menu at Starbucks?

According to an ex-Starbucks barista, there is no secret menu even though this has been a thing in social media, particularly TikTok. He said that divulging a Starbucks “secret menu” is just a way for TikTokers to generate more clicks. There’s probably a lot of truth to that.

There is one thing that Starbucks doesn’t publicize on its menu, and that is the Short order. Short can be seen in the app but is not in the in-store menu. The Short size was removed from printing after Starbucks realized that its customers want larger sizes. However, this size has always been available for any drink; you just need to ask the barista.

Starbucks often introduces specialty drinks during seasons, holidays, and special occasions. They also offer limited-time products as well.

Is Starbucks considered a cheap or expensive coffee shop?

According to Marketwatch, Starbucks is considered an “affordable luxury.” At first glance, Starbucks coffees may seem to have “gourmet” pricing. However, there are more expensive coffees in specialty shops. A lot of the costs are also determine by the number of premium customizations like syrups or extra foam.

For example, a medium Starbucks coffee may cost $3.07. The same size coffee sold in a specialty coffee shop may be sold at $3.43. Of course, if you want really cheap coffee you could visit McDonald’s where they often offer any sized coffees for only $1. Nobody beats McDonald’s when it comes to price.

Why is Starbucks more expensive than Dunkin Donuts?
